Why I Tithe
I grew up in the church. Giving ten percent of whatever income I made was always just something I did. It was automatic and robotic. When I went to college, I was challenged by the verse:
Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7, NASB)
Prior to encountering God over this passage, I never begrudgingly gave my tithe to the church or God. But, I certainly did it out of compulsion. It was simply another “utility bill” to pay. This verse radically changed “Why I Tithe.” I tithe because it’s the most costly form of worship I can offer God. This transformation of my why revolutionized my when, where, how, and how much…
When I’m paid, tithing is the first thing I do.
Where I tithe is exclusively my local church (although I donate above and beyond to other good causes).
How I tithe is with a complete focus toward God regardless of circumstances and without restrictions.
How much is no longer a question of meeting a minimum 10% of my gross income. Rather, how much above and beyond God is leading me to give.
I’ve been amazed at how God continually blesses my finances! What’s your why? How does it impact your when, where, how, and how much?
